Financial Aid Optimization

Our team takes a comprehensive look at how financial aid supports enrollment from the first award through renewal. We examine the student and family experience, identify where strategy or process may be creating friction, and help your team strengthen the way aid influences enrollment decisions.

Every Dollar, Not Just the Grid

Most aid reviews focus on merit and need-based awarding. We look across the full discounting picture so your institution can understand how every form of aid contributes to enrollment strategy and net revenue.

Aid Beyond the First Year

Financial aid continues to shape affordability long after a student enrolls. We review how renewal policies and ongoing support affect a student’s ability to persist from year to year.

Built from Experience

The work is led by higher education professionals who have managed financial aid from inside institutions. That firsthand experience brings both strategic perspective and an understanding of the student and family decisions that ultimately shape enrollment.

Institutional Aid Strategy Review

Aid awarded is easy to measure. Understanding the impact can be a challenge.

Financial aid strategies often become fragmented as new awards, policies, and discounting practices are added over time. OptEd brings those pieces together to evaluate what is still serving the institution well and where the strategy needs to evolve.

We place that review in the context of your competitive market, then work with your team to shape a practical roadmap for better alignment between aid, pricing, and enrollment goals.

What to Expect

A clear path from start to results.

Each engagement follows a defined scope and concludes with a strategic recommendations brief. We begin by understanding the institution’s goals, examine the financial aid environment in context, and use what we learn on campus to shape recommendations your leadership can act on.

Discovery

Leadership conversations clarify the goals of the engagement and the challenges that need the most attention.

Data & Documentation

We review your current aid structure and supporting institutional data to understand how policy and strategy are working today.

On Campus

One to two days on campus give us direct access to the people closest to the student experience and reveal where strategy may be breaking down in practice.

Review & Synthesis

Follow-up conversations help confirm what we learned and ensure recommendations are grounded in your institution’s reality.

Recommendations

You receive a prioritized roadmap that separates immediate opportunities from longer-term changes. Leadership reviews the draft before the final recommendations are delivered.

Common Questions

Discover how we optimize education.

A complete inventory of your institutional awards with criteria, amounts, renewal terms and budget lines; three to five years of discount rate, net tuition revenue and headcount by population; yield by award tier; and retention by award level. Most institutions can produce this. Where trend data is difficult to assemble, that is worth knowing in itself — it usually points to something we should look at.

It varies with scope. A typical sequence is several discovery calls, a data-gathering period, one to two days on campus, follow-up review calls, a draft for your VP, and a final document. We scope the timeline with you at the outset.

Sometimes. More often we find awards that should be restructured, awards that are reaching the wrong audience, and gaps where you are not competing at all. Recommendations run in every direction — modify, discontinue, repurpose, create. This also depends on your goals.

The recommendations are the deliverable, prioritized so your team knows where to start. Some partners take it and execute. Others ask us to check back in a few months on progress and obstacles. We scope ongoing support to what you need rather than putting you on a retainer.

More people than you might expect. Financial aid and admission, certainly, but also marketing, athletics, retention, academic leadership, the business office, and whoever manages departmental and endowed awards. Much of the value comes from getting those groups into one conversation.
